Hyundai's Fuel Efficiency Goal: 50 MPG by 2025
At the forefront of fuel-efficient technology, Hyundai currently offers new cars that exceed the industry average for both fuel economy and affordability. Yet Hyundai is striving to improve its offerings even more. To learn more about Hyundai’s current fuel-efficient lineup and the plan to expand its selection of electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles, continue reading:
Current Gasoline-Powered Offerings
For 2012, Hyundai already boasts a very efficient lineup of cars, thanks to a technology called direct injection. This allows many of Hyundai’s engines to burn fuel evenly and more thoroughly than standard gasoline engines would. Because of this, Hyundai’s subcompact cars, such as the Accent and the Veloster, get at least 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, while Hyundai’s roomy compact crossovers—the Tucson and the Santa Fe—achieve over 27 mpg on the highway while providing exciting power.
Current Hybrid Models and Future Expansion
At present, the family-friendly Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is able to achieve 40 mpg highway fuel economy, and is priced more attractively than the competition from both American and Japanese automakers. By 2025, Hyundai hopes to achieve 20% of its annual sales from hybrids by producing a compact hybrid that leads the market in both efficiency and style.
Future Electric and Fuel Cell Cars
Last year in Frankfurt, Germany, Hyundai unveiled its Blue-Will plug-in hybrid concept. The automaker plans to expand its plug-in offerings as the performance of lithium-ion batteries increases and the cost of producing them decreases. And although Hyundai is also looking at fuel cell technology, it is aiming for 5% of the company’s overall sales in 2025 to be from electric-powered vehicles.
